“I’m Coming Back Better Than Ever” – Courtney Vandersloot Pushes Back After Angel Reese’s Controversial WNBA Roster Comments

Vandersloot pushes back after Reese’s roster remarks

Chicago Sky guard Courtney Vandersloot has been out since June with a torn ACL, but she reentered headlines this week after teammate Angel Reese raised questions about her role for the next season.

In an interview with team broadcaster Shimmy Miller, recorded before Wednesday’s win over the Connecticut Sun and released Saturday, Vandersloot made her stance clear.

“Contrary to what people say or think, my age is absolutely not a factor. I am coming back,” the 36-year-old said. “I’m gonna come back better than ever because that’s what I’ve done. I’ve put myself in the position to come back and compete at this age.”

Vandersloot’s response was directed at Angel Reese, who publicly voiced frustration about the Chicago Sky’s roster construction and her desire for significant offseason changes.

Reese’s comments went beyond general concerns about free agency. She specifically highlighted teammates she felt could not be relied upon moving forward in the WNBA.

“I’m not settling for the same shit we did this year,” Reese said. “We have to get good players. We have to get great players. That’s a non-negotiable for me.”

The All-Star forward named Courtney Vandersloot, Rachel Banham and Hailey Van Lith as players she did not see as certain returners, saying she and Kamilla Cardoso were the only guaranteed pieces on the roster.

Her remarks about Vandersloot drew particular attention.

“We can’t rely on Courtney to come back at the age that she’s at,” Reese said. “I know she’ll be a great asset for us, but we can’t rely on that. We need someone probably a little younger with some experience, somebody who’s been playing the game and is willing to compete for a championship and has done it before.”
