Swiatek returns to action in Montreal against qualifier Hanyu Guo in a second-round mismatch on paper.
Coming off her sixth Grand Slam title and first Wimbledon crown, Iga Swiatek begins her Montreal campaign as the second seed, facing qualifier Hanyu Guo in the second round of the National Bank Open. Swiatek, who received a first-round bye, has been remarkably consistent in 2025. She has fired 143 aces, converted 51.7% of break points, and claimed 68.7% of first-serve points while winning 47.6% on return.

Outside her Rome stumble, she’s reached semifinals at the Australian Open, Roland Garros, Indian Wells, Doha, and Madrid, and quarterfinals in Miami, Stuttgart, and Dubai, plus finals in Bad Homburg and her historic Wimbledon run, where she dismantled Amanda Anisimova 6-0, 6-0.
Guo, meanwhile, pulled off an upset over Yulia Putintseva in the opening round. Ranked No. 259 in singles and No. 33 in doubles, the 27-year-old Chinese player has yet to win a WTA singles title but has five WTA doubles trophies, including Adelaide and Bad Homburg this year with Alexandra Panova. In ITF play, she’s lifted four singles and 11 doubles titles.

My journey into sports media began far from the field, rooted in the arts and sciences. Funny enough, I didn’t grow up a sports fan; I used to see it all as just noise. But a fateful writing job introduced me to the world of sports, and what began as a gig quickly became a passion. I understood those voices aren’t noise; they’re emotions of true sports fans, and now I am one of them, writing with the same energy I once questioned.
