The World No. 2 faces an uphill battle against a familiar foe in Svitolina.
Having recently divulged her struggles to maintain her form amidst challenging circumstances, Iga Swiatek has looked like her old self in Miami so far. It is never easy when you have been faced with a doping accusation, paired with a constant evolution of players on the WTA Tour. The five-time Grand Slam champion is set to renew her rivalry with Ukrainian veteran Elina Svitolina on Monday when they lock horns in the Round of 16.
It will be a treat for the fans on Stadium Court as two players with immense respect for each other step out on the battlefield. Swiatek started slow against Elise Mertens, but emerged victorious in straight sets. On the other hand, Svitolina has already defeated former Olympic champion Belinda Bencic and Grand Slam finalist Karolina Muchova in Miami so far.
Iga Swiatek leads the head-to-head against Elina Svitolina 2-1.
Swiatek and Svitolina have met thrice on the professional circuit thus far. The two players are on great terms with each other, with Swiatek showing big support for Ukraine after the conflict. In the first of three encounters, the reigning French Open winner beat Svitolina in straight sets.
A multiple-time major semifinalist in her own right, Elina bounced back in the duel to beat Iga at the 2023 Wimbledon Championships. It was a tight three set battle which the Ukrainian eventually edged out. Finally, Swiatek regained the lead in the head-to-head with a comfortable 6-1 6-4 success at the 2024 Dubai DutyFree Championships.
