Swiatek seeks dominance, Rybakina aims redemption in high-stakes WTA Finals clash

World No. 2 Iga Swiatek is set to face world No. 6 Elena Rybakina at the 2025 WTA Finals. In the earlier group stage, the Pole eased past No. 7 Madison Keys in straight sets, while Rybakina was upset by No. 4 Amanda Anisimova. Swiatek has enjoyed another stellar and consistent season, capturing titles at Wimbledon, Cincinnati, and Seoul, defeating Amanda Anisimova, Jasmine Paolini, and Ekaterina Alexandrova in those finals.

She also made a runner-up finish in Bad Homburg, falling to Jessica Pegula in straight sets. The Pole reached the semifinals in Melbourne, Doha, Indian Wells, Madrid, and Roland Garros and posted quarterfinal results in Dubai, Miami, Stuttgart, the US Open, and most recently, Wuhan. Her only early exits came in Rome, Montreal, and Beijing. Across 77 matches this season, Swiatek has struck 235 aces with a 69.3% first-serve win rate, 47.9% return points won, and a 51.5% break-point conversion rate.

Rybakina, meanwhile, has had a strong yet uneven year. The Kazakh started well with semifinal finishes in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, followed by a quarterfinal in Doha before enduring a mid-season dip. She rebounded impressively, winning titles in Strasbourg, defeating Liudmila Samsonova in three sets, and in Ningbo, where she overcame Ekaterina Alexandrova. She also reached the semifinals in Washington, Montreal, Cincinnati, and Tokyo (withdrew due to a back issue), along with quarterfinal runs in London, Berlin, and Wuhan. Over 71 matches, Rybakina has delivered 468 aces, winning 74.4% of first serves and 43.1% of return points, and converting 42.2% of break points.

Iga Swiatek vs. Elena Rybakina Head-to-Head Record

Iga Swiatek holds a 6-4 edge in her head-to-head against Elena Rybakina. Their first meeting came in Ostrava in 2021, where Swiatek claimed a straight-sets win. The rivalry shifted in Rybakina’s favor in 2023, as the Kazakh won three straight, though her victory in Rome came after Swiatek retired with a right thigh injury.

Swiatek answered the following year with a title run in Doha, but Rybakina regained momentum in Stuttgart for her fourth win. This season, however, the Pole has firmly turned the tables, winning four encounters at the United Cup, Doha, Roland Garros, and Cincinnati.

My journey into sports media began far from the field, rooted in the arts and sciences. Funny enough, I didn’t grow up a sports fan; I used to see it all as just noise. But a fateful writing job introduced me to the world of sports, and what began as a gig quickly became a passion. I understood those voices aren’t noise; they’re emotions of true sports fans, and now I am one of them, writing with the same energy I once questioned.
