Winner to face Tauson or Paolini in the QFs.
World No. 2 Iga Swiatek and former Olympic gold medalist Belinda Bencic will meet for the first time since Wimbledon, as they battle it out for a spot in the WTA Wuhan Open 2025 quarterfinals. Although the Polish superstar brushed aside her opponent in their previous bout, Bencic is back on a surface that suits her style of play. The winner of this match will take on either Clara Tauson or Jasmine Paolini in the last eight. Continue reading to know whom we predict to advance, as well as the favorite in the BetMGM best odds.
Three months ago, Iga Swiatek demolished Belinda Bencic 6-2 6-0 in the semifinal of the 2025 Wimbledon Championships. The 24-year-old has made a terrific comeback in the ongoing season, and has three titles to her name so far. Across 16 events this year, Swiatek has failed to reach the quarterfinal stage only thrice. This has given her a commendable success rate of 81%, which is just under her career winning ratio of 82%. The six-time Grand Slam champion won Wimbledon, Cincinnati and Seoul thus far, and defeated Marie Bouzkova 6-1 6-1 in the Wuhan Round of 32.

After giving birth and returning to tour, 13th seed Belinda Bencic continues to inspire women in sport. The 28-year-old is currently ranked No. 15 in the world, and has gold medal successes at the Tokyo Olympics, Fed Cup and Hopman Cup in the past. In 2025, Bencic won the Abu Dhabi Open to get her season up and running. A former junior No. 1 and WTA World No. 4, the Swiss maestro came into the Wuhan Open 2025 with a win-loss record of 30-15 to her name. The 2025 Wimbledon semifinalist thrashed Donna Vekic 6-2 6-2 in Round-1, before receiving a walkover against Elise Mertens in the Round of 32.

Swiatek has an advantageous 4-1 record in the head-to-head against Bencic. The rivalry between the two players began in 2021.
Apart from their Round of 16 encounter at the 2023 Wimbledon Championships, all of the Swiatek-Bencic battles have been determined in straight sets. When they first met in Adelaide four years ago, Swiatek steamrolled her Swiss counterpart in the final. After Bencic made a comeback at the 2021 US Open, it has been one-way traffic in favor of the Pole.

Swiatek has a great record against Bencic, and we sense that she will pick up another victory over the 28-year-old on Thursday. Bencic’s defensive prowess has taken a slight hit over time, and the depth on Swiatek’s groundstrokes might be too hot to handle. Although the Swiss starlet could grab a set due to her ability to take time away from her opponent, the second seed is likely to prevail in this marquee clash. If Swiatek can make some improvements on her second serve which earned her just 44% success in Round-2, Bencic will have very few openings.
Prediction: Iga Swiatek in three sets.
