Hurricanes Negotiating Contract Extension with Eric Robinson

Carolina Hurricanes and forward Eric Robinson are reportedly discussing a contract extension to secure his future with the team.

Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet mentioned in his “32 Thoughts” blog on Tuesday that an extension for winger Eric Robinson with the Hurricanes “appears likely.” The 29-year-old became authorized to sign one on Jan. 1 after finalizing a one-year, $950K deal with Carolina during free agency last summer.

Robinson’s choice to accept a prove-it contract with the Canes has been beneficial for both parties. Carolina acquired essential economical forward depth after losing Jake Guentzel, Stefan Noesen, and Teuvo Teräväinen to free agency. Concurrently, Robinson excelled in a supporting role and set himself up for a substantial increase on his upcoming contract.

The Hurricanes face significant UFAs-to-be this season, specifically Brent Burns and Dmitry Orlov on defense, along with another important depth scorer, Jack Roslovic, at forward. Logically, general manager Eric Tulsky aims to finalize a deal quickly with at least one of them.

Robinson is probably seeking stability after being traded from the Blue Jackets, where he began his career, to the Sabres last season and then joining Carolina in free agency. He has recorded nine goals and 11 assists for a total of 20 points over 41 games, on track for a career-best 40 points while averaging 12 minutes of playtime per game.

Typically utilized as a checking winger with significant defensive zone responsibilities, Robinson’s offensive zone usage under Rod Brind’Amour has surged. After beginning over 60% of his 5-on-5 faceoffs in the defensive zone during his seven years in Columbus, he has initiated 62.8% in the offensive zone since joining Carolina. He’s also getting semi-significant penalty-killing time and proving his versatility on special teams.

Robinson’s offensive production likely positions him for a new contract in the $3 million range per season, with Dakota Joshua’s recent four-year deal at a $3.25 million AAV with the Canucks serving as a potential benchmark. The New Jersey native has never had an average annual value exceeding $1.6 million on any of his five NHL contracts.
