Rune Faces Fucsovics Test as Stockholm Second Round Heats Up

Top seed Holger Rune is set to clash with unseeded Marton Fucsovics in the second round of the Stockholm Open 2025. Rune received a first-round bye as the top seed, while Fucsovics advanced with a straight-sets win over Jesper de Jong. Rune has enjoyed a solid season, marked by several deep runs and a title in Barcelona, where he stunned Carlos Alcaraz in straight sets.

However, his campaign has also featured setbacks, forced retirements in Monte Carlo and Madrid due to illness and a knee twist, followed by a withdrawal from Washington with lower back pain. Still, the Dane rebounded impressively, reaching the Indian Wells final before falling to Jack Draper in straight sets and making quarterfinal runs in London, Cincinnati, Tokyo, and most recently, Shanghai. Statistically, he’s delivered 260 aces this season, winning 72% of his first-serve points, 29% on return, and converting 42% of his 343 break points.

Fucsovics, meanwhile, has experienced an up-and-down year. The Hungarian opened with a quarterfinal run in Noumea and later captured Challenger titles in Manama and Winston-Salem, where he upset Botic van de Zandschulp in straight sets. His season also includes semifinal finishes in Bucharest and quarterfinal appearances in Murcia and Stuttgart. However, most recently, he suffered a first-round exit in Shanghai to Jaume Munar in three sets (though heat and humidity played a role). Stat-wise, he’s fired 102 aces, winning 73% of his first-serve points, 31% on return, and converting 39% of his 221 break points.

My journey into sports media began far from the field, rooted in the arts and sciences. Funny enough, I didn’t grow up a sports fan; I used to see it all as just noise. But a fateful writing job introduced me to the world of sports, and what began as a gig quickly became a passion. I understood those voices aren’t noise; they’re emotions of true sports fans, and now I am one of them, writing with the same energy I once questioned.
