Holger Rune Sets Sights On Becoming World Number One – Approaches Tennis Legend Ahead of the North American Swing

Rune will look to put the Wimbledon disappointment behind him as preparation for US Open gets under way

Danish tennis player, Holger Rune, currently the World number eight on the ATP tour, recently teamed up with former American great, and a legend of the game, Andre Agassi, ahead of the Mubadala Citi DC Open.

Agassi, who is a former 8-time major winner, was one of the few players who conquered all three surfaces of hard courts, grass, and clay. While the hard courts were where he was at his best, Agassi’s unique style of play helped him achieve plenty of success on the court.

What led Rune to Work With Agassi?

With the North American Hard Court swing underway, it will be an exciting few weeks of action before the all-important final Grand Slam of the year at Flushing Meadows in late August.

Rune, who has always aimed at becoming the top tennis player, believes that he can still realize his dream, but for that, it is essential to iron out some of the flaws in his game.

Enter Agassi, someone who can provide the Dane a fresh outlook on his game, and help him raise his game to the next level. In a Media Day interview with Tennis.com’s David Kane, Rune mentioned that he had reached out to Agassi some months back.

“I reached out to him some months ago. He’s an amazing man, first of all, and he’s very wise, as well. He sees the game in a unique way that I’ve never experienced before.”

Rune also mentioned that his stint with Agassi was more of a three-day mentorship and not a full-time coaching venture. While Rune was just a three-year-old when Agassi retired in 2006, the Dane stated that he watched videos of the American’s style of play on YouTube.

Rune in 2025

The Danish player has shown promise once again this year with a couple of good results. He made his first final at Indian Wells where he lost in straight sets against Jack Draper, but also took out the likes of Stefanos Tsitsipas and Daniil Medvedev along the way.

He then had an amazing run at Barcelona where he defeated Casper Ruud, Karen Khachanov, and Carlos Alcaraz to lift his first title of the year. However, his season has been inconsistent, especially the first-round loss at Wimbledon being one of his worst performances in 2025.

Looking ahead, though, Rune will play his first match at the Mubadala Citi DC Open against Alexandre Müller as he begins his quest for the crucial hard court swing in North America.
