Tottenham Face Stiff Competition for Harvey Elliott as Brentford Enter the Race

Tottenham Hotspur’s pursuit of Harvey Elliott has hit a potential roadblock, with Fabrizio Romano confirming that the North London club now faces strong competition for the Liverpool midfielder — most notably from Premier League rivals Brentford.

Spurs have been eyeing a creative midfielder this summer, and Elliott has emerged as a primary target. However, despite Tottenham’s interest, the 21-year-old has yet to indicate any firm desire to leave Anfield, keeping his future in limbo. The situation remains fluid, with several clubs tracking the England youth international closely.

Brentford’s Interest and the Central Role Promise to Elliott

Brentford boss Thomas Frank has reportedly identified Elliott as a potential replacement for Morgan Gibbs-White — who was previously linked with a move to the Gtech Community Stadium but has opted to stay at Nottingham Forest for now. According to TBR Football, Frank has promised Elliott the opportunity to play in his preferred central role, an offer the player is understood to appreciate.

Elliott has made it clear to all suitors that he’s only interested in a move where he is deployed centrally, rather than out wide — where he has often been used under Jürgen Klopp. Brentford’s willingness to accommodate that demand could hand them a significant edge in negotiations.

Liverpool’s Asking Price a Key Factor

The financial demands of the deal could be another stumbling block. As reported by The Athletic, Liverpool are open to selling Elliott but would demand a fee of at least £40 million — only if a buy-back clause is included in the contract. If Tottenham or any other club reject that clause, the asking price could shoot up to over £50 million, which would represent a sizeable investment for a player who isn’t currently a regular starter at Liverpool and has had injury concerns in the past.

Spurs Must Decide Between Potential and Practicality

While there’s no doubting Elliott’s talent and technical ability, Tottenham must weigh the value of investing £40–50 million in a player who still has much to prove at the highest level. At the same time, missing out on the England youth international could allow a direct rival like Brentford to secure a creative asset with long-term potential.
