Manchester City produced a dominant display to open the 2025/26 Premier League season, sweeping Wolves aside 4-0 on Saturday afternoon.
Erling Haaland maintained his remarkable opening-day record with a brace, while summer signings Tijjani Reijnders and Rayan Cherki made dream debuts by finding the net.
The breakthrough came on 34 minutes when Rico Lewis whipped in a precise cross from the right, met by Haaland at the back post for the opener. Wolves were still recovering when Oscar Bobb threaded a pass to Reijnders, who rifled home his first goal in English football with a powerful strike.
City’s control only grew after the break. A flowing move involving James Trafford, Reijnders and Bobb ended with Haaland drilling his second of the afternoon past José Sá, underlining his status as the league’s most reliable source of goals.
Reijnders was central to much of City’s attacking play, displaying composure and vision in midfield that immediately marked him out as a valuable addition to Pep Guardiola’s squad.
Substitute Cherki then capped a perfect debut by smashing home City’s fourth just eight minutes after his introduction, leaving Wolves with little response in front of a subdued Molineux crowd.
The result ensured that Haaland extended his unique streak of scoring on all four of his Premier League opening days since arriving from Borussia Dortmund. The Norwegian has also now scored 10 goals in six meetings against Wolves.
Beyond the scoreline, the afternoon carried emotional weight as Wolves paid tribute to former forward Diogo Jota, who tragically passed away alongside his brother earlier this summer. Both sets of supporters joined in a minute’s applause before kick-off, while a striking tifo in his honour was unveiled.
For City, the afternoon represented the perfect start to their title defence, with Haaland’s consistency and the instant impact of their new signings setting a strong early statement.
