Germany will aim to get their 2026 World Cup qualification campaign back on track when they take on Luxembourg and Northern Ireland in October. The four-time world champions endured a difficult start to the qualifiers. They went winless in four consecutive games earlier this year.

This includes a 2-1 defeat to Slovakia in their opening fixture. With six points still to play for this month, Julian Nagelsmann’s men have an opportunity to steady the ship and regain confidence heading into the final rounds. Especially considering the World Cup 2026 is knocking on the door.

The upcoming fixtures will also serve as a test of depth for the manager. Nagelsmann continues to shape his long-term vision for the national side ahead of the 2026 tournament in North America. Nagelsmann’s focus remains on building a balance between experienced internationals and emerging talents.

This has come to focus especially after injuries and inconsistency disrupted earlier performances. Especially in the midst of packed club game fixtures. The matches against Luxembourg and Northern Ireland are therefore expected to be crucial in restoring momentum and securing Germany’s qualification push.

In terms of squad selection, Nagelsmann has named a largely Bundesliga-based group. Only Florian Wirtz and Nick Woltemade are playing outside Germany. Both players are currently playing in the recent Premier League arrivals. Bayern Munich have especially been well represented.

Alexander Nubel, Jonathan Tah, Leon Goretzka, Joshua Kimmich, Aleksandar Pavlović, and Serge Gnabry all have been included. Ridle Baku returns to the setup after a long absence. Meanwhile Nico Schlotterbeck and Nathaniel Brown have been recalled following impressive domestic form.

Eintracht Frankfurt forward Jonathan Burkardt is also back in contention. He has been rewarded for his early-season performances. However, notable absentees include Leroy Sane, who has been left out for the second consecutive squad. Antonio Ridiger as well who remains sidelined through injury.
