Last year was one to forget for the San Francisco 49ers faithful, who witnessed a remarkable turnaround in fortunes following their Super Bowl showing in the 2023 season. The 49ers, albeit due to injuries to several key players, went 6-11 after starting 4-4 before their bye week.

With the impending contract extension set to happen for quarterback Brock Purdy, San Francisco saw the departures of several key players during free agency on both sides of the ball. However, things have taken a drastic u-turn as the 49ers have gotten key contract extensions done, with the latest one being that of Fred Warner.

The latest big contract extension to come out of the 49ers’ camp is that of superstar linebacker Fred Warner. The 4-time Pro Bowler earned a massive extension for 3 years worth $63 million with $56 million in guaranteed money, and an annual salary of $21 million.

Warner’s latest deal means that he is now the highest-paid inside linebacker after toppling Roquan Smith, who is earning $20 million a year. Warner’s extension comes as no real surprise given that he has been the best off-ball linebacker in the league for at least the last 4 seasons, and is one of the most fundamental pieces to their defense.

Busy Month of May for 49ers Amidst Contract Extensions

The 49ers have used their available money and put it to good use, considering the other two huge contract extensions they have worked out this offseason.

First and foremost, they tied down top tight end George Kittle to a four-year extension, followed by quarterback Brock Purdy’s five-year deal that has catapulted him amongst the league’s highest earners.

George Kittle

George Kittle has been near the top of the rankings when it comes to the tight ends in this league. Ever since he entered the league in 2017, Kittle has performed to the highest of standards, be it as a pass blocker or a pass catcher.

Deservedly, the 31-year-old earned a massive payday as he signed a four-year extension worth $76.4 million, which includes a guarantee of $35 million. With an average annual salary of $19.1 million, Kittle is now the highest-paid tight end in NFL history.

The next person to earn the big bucks was Brock Purdy, who recently earned one of the biggest pay raises in the sport. From a meagre $3.73 million over 4 years during his rookie contract, Purdy now joins the top tier of the highest-paid players in the league.

The 49ers extended their signal caller to a five-year deal worth a whopping $265 million with $181 million guaranteed. His $53 million average annual salary now places him tied 7th overall amongst all quarterbacks.

49ers Have Built a Squad Worthy of a Super Bowl Run

Looking at the overall roster for the 49ers, despite losing several key players in the offseason, they still have immense talent on both sides of the ball. As mentioned earlier, they have already retained three core players to long-term deals, and that will only add fuel to the burning fire to make it back to the Super Bowl after their 2023 campaign.

On offense, the 49ers already boast of Christian McCaffrey for a strong running game, and the wide receiver core of Brandon Aiyuk, Jauan Jennings, and Ricky Pearsall should provide ample targets for Purdy, along with Kittle at tight end.

On defense, the capabilities of Nick Bosa at defensive end are well-known to one and all, but the team’s latest addition of Mykel Williams through the draft could provide him quality support from the other end. Warner and Dee Winters will also provide a boost from the second level of defense.

The 49ers not only have enough talent on the roster, but they also have one of the better offensive minds in the game in head coach Kyle Shanahan, who knows how to draw up unique plays. If the team can remain healthy this season, there is no doubt they can challenge for the Lombardi Trophy once again.
