Fred VanVleet Named NBPA President Ahead of CBA Talks, Big Tech Reforms Incoming

Fred VanVleet has officially been elected as the new president of the National Basketball Players Association. The elections for the fresh tenure were held during the Board of Player Representatives’ annual summer meeting on Saturday. VanVleet replaces CJ McCollum and will head a four-year tenure.

The National Basketball Players Association is one of the most important bodies representing the interests of the players. The union advocates for improved working conditions and fair CBA agreements for all NBA players. CJ McCollum recently finished his tenure.

Fred VanVleet will be leading the collective bargaining negotiations, including discussions about a possible opt-out after the 2028-29 season. He will serve as the primary communication channel between the players and the league leadership.

The Houston Rockets star will now work alongside several league leaders in the NBPA Executive Committee. That includes Grant Williams, who serves as the First Vice President. Vice Presidents Jaylen Brown, Donovan Mitchell, Karl-Anthony Towns, Jaren Jackson Jr. etc.

VanVleet Outlines Digital Roadmap for NBPA

Fred VanVleet’s off-court leadership track played a key role in securing his NBPA election win. The 31-year-old also presented a roadmap for player’s welfare to make his appointment case stronger. VanVleet wants to bring more changes on the technological front.

He has signalled on bringing a union exclusive app where players can securely vote on CBA ramifications via one click blockchain ballots and access real time salary cap projections. This includes hosting digital town halls with the executive committee.

Also, to ensure tamperproof results, Fred VanVleet is desperate to formalize a blockchain based ballot system. The NBPA already used such a technology on a pilot basis during the 2023 CBA opt-out.

VanVleet has vowed sweeping changes while prioritizing the collective interests of all league players. With debates intensifying around the second apron, VanVleet’s leadership is set for major trials with league executives.
