Under McNair's leadership, the Kings made it to their first playoffs in 16 years during the 2022-23 season.
The Sacramento Kings have decided to part ways with their General Manager Monte McNair following their elimination from the 2025 NBA Play-In Tournament. According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, the development comes as a mutual agreement agreement. A league source added that both the sides decided to split mutually after the team’s race to the NBA Championship ended after a 120-106 loss to the Dallas Mavericks.
The Kings got McNair on board before the beginning of the 2020-21 season, and he helped them make it to the playoffs for the first time in 16 years in 2023. They had finished third in the West with a regular-season record of 48-34. He was adjudged the NBA Executive of the Year after the franchise ended a decade-and-a-half long drought to reach the playoffs.
They maintained a .488 win percentage under McNair, which was .362 from 2006-07 to before he took over the reins. Before joining the Kings, he was a part of the Houston Rockets, where he served as the basketball operations senior analyst, director of basketball operations, VP of basketball operations, and assistant GM.

The news of the Kings and McNair parting ways came just moments after they were knocked out of the play-in tournament by the Dallas Mavericks. While the Kings received fans’ thrashing for not being able to make it to the playoffs for another season, the front office’s decision to let go of their GM drew mixed reactions. Let’s how fans reacted on X (formerly Twitter) –
The Sacramento Kings deadass have no future. Not even one young guy you look on that team and say “yeah he’s the future of that team.”

Since 2007, the Kings have been able to make it to the playoffs only once in 2023. However, in that edition, they couldn’t move past the First Round as they were handed a 4-3 loss to the Golden State Warriors.
