The German youngster defeated Elena Rybakina in the R32.
German young gun Eva Lys takes on McCartney Kessler of the USA in the 2025 China Open pre-quarterfinals on Tuesday. The former has overcome a string of injuries to find form at the right time of the season. Meanwhile, Kessler is looking to put an end to another in-form player’s campaign in Beijing. Today, we look to give you an in-depth insight into this clash on the Asian hard courts. Following this, BetMGM will offer you the best betting odds.
Coming into this tournament, Eva Lys had a success rate of just 55% this year. The 23-year-old reached her maiden Grand Slam Round of 16 at the 2025 Australian Open, and reached the Round of 64 at all the other majors. Unfortunately, a quarterfinal appearance at Tennis in the Land happens to be her only other noteworthy performance in the ongoing season. This week in Beijing – the World No. 66 has been playing some of the best tennis seen from her. After thrashing Zhang in Round-1, Lys took out two seeds in the form of Jovic and Rybakina.

One of the rising stars of American tennis, McCartney Kessler has two titles to her name in 2025 – in Hobart and Nottingham. She was also runner-up at the ATX Open in Austin. The 26-year-old became a Top-30 player in June, and currently ranks No. 39 in the world. Since Wimbledon, Kessler managed just four wins on tour – damaging her otherwise phenomenal record to 34-20. She has defeated Shi Han, Elise Mertens and Barbora Krejcikova so far this week.

Eva Lys leads the head-to-head against McCartney Kessler by 2-0. While the first of these was a straightforward victory, the German needed three tight sets at Osaka last year.

Considering the way Kessler has been hitting the ball this week, it is hard to look past her. However, Lys managed to beat Rybakina in the Round of 32, which is a big ask. One can expect a thriller of a contest – while Kessler will inject pace and power into the dynamic, Lys will look to use the venom and counter it with depth and accuracy. There will definitely be plenty of close service games on Tuesday. The player who can hold their nerve to remain assured on serve, will grab the victory.
Prediction: McCartney Kessler in three sets.
