Enzo Maresca couldn’t contain his emotions as Chelsea sealed a dramatic 2-1 win against Liverpool at Stamford Bridge on Saturday. Teenager Willian Estevao scored his first for the Blues and the decisive goal to seal the win in the 95th minute.

The Italian manager sprinted down the touchline to join his players in celebration, only to be shown a second yellow card moments later. Maresca had already been booked earlier in the match for furiously protesting a VAR decision when Alejandro Garnacho went down.

He was brought down following a challenge from Dominik Szoboszlai. It would have been a penalty claim that was eventually waved off. His touchline dash following Estevao’s late strike proved to be the final straw for referee Anthony Taylor, who promptly sent him off.

Sky Sports commentator Gary Neville summed up the moment, saying, “He’s been sent off, he won’t care about that. Well worth being sent off for. What a celebration.” Former Liverpool and Chelsea striker Daniel Sturridge echoed the sentiment, noting, “You saw what it meant to Chelsea, not just as a group of players but as a management team as well.”

Maresca’s exuberant sprint was reminiscent of Jose Mourinho’s famous Old Trafford celebration in 2004, when he raced down the touchline as Porto manager. It was a raw, emotional release for a coach who has been facing scrutiny following Chelsea’s inconsistent start to the season.

Chelsea have been dealing with a long injury list and back-to-back league defeats. The team produced a determined performance against the reigning champions. Moises Caicedo’s long-range strike had given Chelsea an early lead before Cody Gakpo equalised. That set up a tense finale that culminated in Estevao’s stoppage-time heroics.

The red card means Maresca will serve a one-match touchline suspension and miss Chelsea’s trip to Nottingham Forest after the international break on October 18. However, he will return for the Champions League clash against Ajax four days later.

Former midfielder Jamie Redknapp reflected on the manager’s passion, saying “The speed of Maresca running down that touchline – he’s the quickest manager I’ve ever seen!” For Maresca, the sending-off may have been inevitable, but in such a game, the emotion was worth every consequence.
