Edmonton Oilers Set to Recall Matthew Savoie and Derek Ryan

Edmonton looks to bolster its lineup as Matthew Savoie and Derek Ryan are expected to be recalled ahead of their upcoming games.

The Edmonton Oilers are gearing up for reinforcements, with forwards Matthew Savoie and Derek Ryan expected to be recalled after participating in the team’s Tuesday practice. Savoie is also set to join Edmonton on their upcoming five-game East Coast road trip.

For Savoie, this potential call-up marks a significant moment. While he has yet to make his Oilers debut, the 20-year-old has been tearing it up in the AHL. With 10 points in his last 10 games and 37 points in 43 outings this season, he’s not only second in scoring for the Bakersfield Condors but also leads all U21 players in the AHL. The Oilers have plenty of reason to be excited about his progress, especially after acquiring him in a surprising trade for Ryan McLeod last summer.

Originally drafted ninth overall by the Buffalo Sabres in 2022, Savoie played just seven pro games within their organization before being dealt. While he didn’t score in his lone NHL appearance, he made an impact in the AHL, tallying five points in six games. Following that stint, he returned to the WHL but has carried his scoring touch into his first full AHL season.

Now, Edmonton has a chance to see if his offensive upside can translate to the NHL. At just 5-foot-9 and 180 pounds, questions remain about how his size will hold up at the highest level. If he struggles, the Oilers have a dependable backup plan in Derek Ryan.

The 38-year-old veteran has already played 33 games for Edmonton this season, contributing a goal, five points, and 12 penalty minutes. He also made a rare AHL appearance, picking up two points in three games—the first time he’s played in the minors since 2016-17. A reliable fourth-liner with experience on three different NHL teams, Ryan brings stability and depth to the Oilers’ bottom-six, even if he doesn’t offer the same burst of energy and offensive potential as Savoie.

With a crucial road trip ahead, Edmonton will be watching closely to see how both players fit into the lineup.
