The 2025 NFL season is set to kick off with a blockbuster clash as the reigning Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles host their fierce NFL East rival, the Dallas Cowboys, on Thursday night, September 4, 2025. This primetime matchup, which will broadcast on NBC, will deliver a high-stake contest between the league’s most storied rivalries. With the Eagles raising their Super Bowl LIX banner and the Cowboys’ entering a new era under head coach Brian Schottenheimer, the stage is set for a fierce battle between the two teams, to start the season at Lincoln Financial Field.

2025 Season Opener- Key Details

This Week 1 encounter will be the first time since 2000 that the Eagles and the Cowboys have faced off in the season opener, a game where the Eagles dominated 41-14 at Texas Stadium under coach Andy Reid. Fast forward to 2025, and the stakes are just as high. The Eagles, fresh off a commanding 40-22 Super Bowl victory over the Kansas City Chiefs, are led by Super Bowl MVP Jalen Hurts and All-Pro running back Saquon Barkley. Having swept Dallas in 2024 season with decisive wins (34-6, 41-7), the Eagles will enter as the obvious favorites to win the battle, and will be eyeing to win the NFC East yet again.

Meanwhile for the Cowboys, this game will mark a new chapter in their history books as Brian Schottenheimer, promoted from offensive coordinator, makes his head-coaching debut after Mike McCarthy’s departure following a disappointing 7-10 season in 2024. Dallas welcomes back familiar faces such as QB Dak Prescott, who has a 9-4 record against the Eagles. They also acquired a new weapon in WR George Pickens, via a trade from Pittsburgh. They also drafted Tyler Booker in the first round of the draft, a guard who is expected to fortify the offensive line this season.

Since 2004, there have been 20 reigning Super Bowl champions that have played in the first game of the season opener and those team have won 15 of the 20 total matchups, which includes the Kansas City Chiefs winning over the Baltimore Ravens last season with the final score of 27-20.

The full 2025 NFL schedule drops Wednesday, at 8:00 p.m. ET, however, all eyes are set on this NFC East clash, between the Philadelphia’s title defense, and Dallas’s attempt to get back into the playoffs by having a winning season this year. With Dak Prescott previously claiming that they have what it takes to beat the Eagles, we will see if that holds up with the current Eagles’ squad.
