DiJonai Carrington Injury Update: Minnesota Lynx Guard Sidelined for Remainder of Postseason with Foot Injury

Garima Ranawat

Carrington suffered the injury during Lynx's 75-74 win over the Golden State Valkyries in Game 2.

The Minnesota Lynx are all set to lock horns with the No. 4 Phoenix Mercury in a best-of-five WNBA semifinals series beginning on Sunday, September 21. They are heavy favorites to come on top and make their way through to the finals. In fact, they were the only team to win the opening round series in two games. However, the top-seeded Lynx received a major blow ahead their semifinals series in the form of guard DiJonai Carrington’s season-ending injury.

Carrington has been sidelined for the remainder of the postseason with a left foot injury. She was already listed on the injury report for the Lynx ahead of Sunday’s Game 1 at the Target Center. The 2024 WNBA Most Improved Player hurt her foot during Wednesday’s Game 2 win over the Golden State Valkyries. She checked out of the game with a few minutes still left to play after her stellar fourth quarter. Carrington was reportedly seen using crutches during Friday’s press conference.

The 27-year-old underwent an MRI and was evaluated by the team physician. A significant mid-foot sprain was confirmed in the reports, forcing her to be out for the rest of the season. The Lynx, in their official announcement said that further updates on her progress and recovery will be shared when available.

Impact of DiJonai Carrington Injury on Lynx’s Postseason

Carrington was acquired by the Lynx from the Dallas Wings during a mid-season trade. Since her arrival to Minnesota, she has played a key role off the bench, and established herself as an important defensive player. In 11 regular-season games for her new side, she averaged 8.6 points, 2.1 rebounds, and 1.1 assists per game. She was shooting 48.5% from the field and 45.5% from beyond the arc.

During the Game 2 win over the Valkyries, she finished with 11 points and two rebounds. Without her, there will be less depth coming off the Lynx’s bench. Still, they don’t have any shortage of talent on a star-studded roster, headlined by names like MVP favorite Napheesa Collier, Kayla McBride, Courtney Williams and Alanna Smith. But it would affect their bench rotation and defensive versatility while diminishing their margin of errors in the crucial semifinals series against the Phoenix Mercury.
