Did Cold Weather Cool Off the Dodgers After Red-Hot Start?

Can the cold actually stop the Dodgers?

The Dodgers stormed out of the gate with an unsurprising 8-0 start, flexing their depth and star power. But a trip to the East Coast has thrown more than just a wrench in their momentum, it’s thrown somewhat of a cold front.

Since arriving in colder climates, Los Angeles has dropped four of its last six, including three straight losses capped by Tuesday night’s 8-2 thumping in Washington. While weather alone doesn’t explain the sudden stumble, it’s certainly been a factor.

“As a player it’s a little hard,” said outfielder Teoscar Hernández. “I was six years on this side, where it’s cold early in the season. Then when I get to L.A. last year it was my first year playing those early games with no cold weather. It’s a big difference. Especially when you’re not used to it, it can make a big difference.””

Hernández didn’t entirely blame the cold, though, it’s not nothing, especially for a West Coast club used to sunshine and short sleeves in April.

“We’re not used to playing in the cold. But it cannot be an excuse for us to perform different.”

Indeed, the numbers support that narrative. The Dodgers haven’t just been cold in temperature, they’ve been cold at the plate until last night, where they managed to put up six runs in a 6-5 win against the Nationals.

With an off-day Thursday and a six-game homestand ahead, the Dodgers are hoping warmer weather, and maybe just being home, can thaw out this uncharacteristic, and potentially short slump. At least we know that even the Dodgers are mortal.
