It's almost starting to look like the 90s "Bad Boys," Pistons all over again!
The Detroit Pistons are one of the most inspiring teams in the 2025 season. Years of agony, struggles, and getting criticized from the media and the analysts have now finally come to a halt as the Pistons have started winning. The biggest part of the change? Head Coach J.B. Bickerstaff who has instilled winning and toughness into these young players.
Last season, the Pistons had lost 28 games in a row and were the laughing stock of the NBA. In fact their losing streak was tied for the worst in NBA history, and they finished the season with a 17-65 record under head coach Monty Williams.
Another piece of the puzzle was the emergence of former No.1 overall pick Cade Cunningham. Since his days playing for the Oklahoma State Cowboys, we all knew that Cunningham had what it takes to shine in the NBA. However, the Pistons were such a bad team that nobody believed he could help turn the franchise around. However, this season Cunningham has shown that he’s a potential superstar level talent in the NBA averaging 25.6 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 9.3 assists (only third behind Jokic and Trae Young) and helping the Pistons to potentially reach the playoffs for the first time since 2018-19 season.

Even the rest of the team, with Isaiah Stewart, Ausar Thompson, Tim Hardaway Jr., Jalen Duren, and all the others, have brought a feel to the Pistons’ squad this season that we have not seen before. It’s almost starting to look like the 90s “Bad Boys,” Pistons all over again!
With that said, let us look at the Pistons chances of getting into the playoffs.
The number one seed in the East is locked to go the the Cleveland Cavaliers, who have been the best regular season team, irrespective of the conferences. The Boston Celtics have also firmly secured the second seed in the East. Sitting pretty at the third seed are the New York Knicks who are currently on a two-game losing streak. Meanwhile the Pacers, the Bucks, and the Pistons are battling to win the fourth seed in the East.
The Detroit Pistons are currently sitting at the 6th spot in the East and have an overall record of 39-32. The Pistons have a 99.7% chance to make the playoffs. They also have a 19.8% chance to finish the season as the 5th seed, and 71.5% chance to finish as the 6th seed. The Milwaukee Bucks are only two losses away from losing the 5th spot to the Pistons, and the further along the season goes, the more unstable the Bucks look.
Playoff Seed | Percentage |
3 | 0.6 |
4 | 6.6 |
5 | 19.8 |
6 | 71.5 |
7 | 0.9 |
8 | 0.3 |

If the NBA regular season was done today, the Pistons would take on the New York Knicks in the playoffs and even though the Knicks are a formidable opponent when healthy, the Pistons still have a solid chance of pulling the upset. If the Pistons climb up to the 5th seed, they will take on the Indiana Pacers and the matchup between the two teams would be extremely competitive, where either teams can come out on top.
