Detroit Lions’ iconic Sonic and Knuckles duo reach historic landmark in franchise history

Lions’ RB duo reaches historic milestone

David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs have become an essential part of the Detroit Lions’ offensive success. Together, the duo—nicknamed “Sonic and Knuckles”—has helped the team to an impressive 11-0 record when both players score touchdowns.

This powerful running back tandem has proven invaluable, with Montgomery recording 12 rushing touchdowns this season and Gibbs contributing four (three rushing and one receiving) over the past four games.

Montgomery, the physical “Knuckles,” has 12 rushing touchdowns in 2024, joining Barry Sanders and Billy Sims as the only Lions players with consecutive seasons of 12+ rushing scores. In the Lions’ 34-31 win over the Packers, he added another touchdown and converted a critical fourth-down play, despite being limited to 51 rushing yards on 14 carries.

Gibbs, the speedster “Sonic,” recorded 43 rushing yards and a receiving touchdown in the same game. The duo’s balanced contributions make the Lions’ offense unpredictable and challenging for defenses to contain. As Gibbs put it, “We both can do everything, so it’s hard for defenses to scheme up against us.”

Jahmyr Gibbs’ 2024 season

Jahmyr Gibbs has been a revelation for the Detroit Lions this season, cementing his place as one of the NFL’s most exciting young talents. With 1,016 rushing yards on 178 carries, Gibbs has emerged as the speedster in the Lions’ backfield, averaging an impressive 5.7 yards per attempt.

His 10 rushing touchdowns, combined with 312 receiving yards and two receiving touchdowns, highlight his versatility and ability to contribute both on the ground and through the air.

David Montgomery’s 2024 season

David Montgomery has been the workhorse of the Lions’ offense this season, excelling in crucial short-yardage situations and showcasing his ability to finish drives in the red zone. With 771 rushing yards on 180 carries, Montgomery has consistently delivered tough yards, averaging 4.3 yards per attempt.

His 12 rushing touchdowns rank among the league’s best and place him alongside Lions legends like Barry Sanders and Billy Sims in consecutive seasons with 12 or more rushing scores.

Why are Gibbs and Montgomery called Sonic and Knuckles?

The nickname “Sonic and Knuckles” originates from the 1990s video game series Sonic the Hedgehog, where Sonic represents speed and Knuckles embodies strength and resilience. This perfectly captures the distinct styles of Gibbs and Montgomery.

Jahmyr Gibbs, known for his blazing speed, naturally fits the “Sonic” persona. Meanwhile, Montgomery’s physical, hard-nosed running style mirrors the strength and toughness of “Knuckles.”

Lions running backs coach Scottie Montgomery explained, “As you can see, if you watch David, he is a huge fan of cartoons and Disney channels and ‘Sonic and Knuckles.’ And speed and then also the brashness of Knuckles… They love it, so I’m gonna run with it.”

The duo embraced their nickname during Detroit’s Thanksgiving game, arriving in Sonic and Knuckles-themed jackets and cleats. Their bond extends beyond the field, with Gibbs describing their relationship as brotherly. “We both can do everything, so it’s hard for defenses to scheme up against us,” Gibbs said.
