Update on Derrick Harmon’s Injury Status

Pittsburgh Steelers rookie defensive tackle Derrick Harmon, selected 21st overall in the 2025 NFL Draft, has been ruled out for the team’s season opener against the New York Jets on September 7, head coach Mike Tomlin announced.

LB Nick Herbig is questionable, though Tomlin noted he had a strong day yesterday and they’ll keep an eye on him through the week.

Harmon suffered a knee injury during the Steelers’ preseason game against the Carolina Panthers on August 21, which was later diagnosed as an MCL sprain. The 22-year old, expected to start alongside Keeanu Benton and Cameron Heyward, was carted off the field, raising concerns about his immediate availability.

Fortunately, a recent update from Pittsburgh insider Gerry Dulac indicates Harmon may miss only one game, offering optimism for a swift return for Pittsburgh fans.

Harmon’s absence in week one will see Isaiahh Loudermilk and rookie Yahya Black stepping up on the defensive line. Harmon, who transferred from Michigan State to Oregon for his 2024 senior season, showcased his potential with the Ducks, recording 45 tackles, 5.0 sacks, 4 passes defended, 2 forced fumbles, and 2 fumble recoveries in 14 games.

Tomlin also noted that linebacker Nick Herbig, nursing a hamstring injury, is trending towards being ready for Sunday’s game, but he is still questionable for now. With the Steelers looking to stay relevant this season, their defensive unit will have to come back in full health if the Steelers are to make the playoffs this season.
