Daniil Medvedev Parted Ways with Longtime Coach Gilles Cervara Following First-Round 2025 US Open Loss

Medvedev and Cervara call time on an eight-year partnership that delivered a Grand Slam title.

Daniil Medvedev has ended his longtime partnership with coach Gilles Cervara following his fiery first-round exit at the 2025 US Open. The split closes the chapter on an eight-year collaboration that saw Medvedev rise from a promising teenager to world No. 1 and a Grand Slam champion. Their parting comes just a week after Medvedev, now 29, lost to Benjamin Bonzi, clashed with umpire Greg Allensworth, and smashed his racket in frustration.

Titles, Tensions, and Goodbye

Medvedev relocated to France as a teenager and began working full-time with Cervara in 2017. Together they built a career that peaked with the 2021 US Open title, six Grand Slam finals, and a No. 1 ATP ranking in 2022. Under Cervara’s guidance, Medvedev also claimed 20 career titles, including the 2020 ATP Finals and six Masters 1000 crowns. Cervara’s work was recognized when he won the ATP Coach of the Year award in 2019.

The Russian acknowledged their history in a heartfelt farewell on Instagram: “Thank you, Gilles. Amazing 8-10 years together, 20 titles, world number 1 but most importantly, a lot of fun moments and memories that will stay with us forever. I am grateful to you for guiding me through all these years and let’s see what life brings us in the future.”

Cervara responded with his own message: “Daniil. Our fantastic eight-season adventure together comes to an end. Like a symbolic wink of life, it’s after this US Open tournament that we end our collaboration. I am grateful and happy for all the great things and wonderful experiences we were able to experience together. It will remain etched in my memory forever.”

He added, “I thank you for placing your trust in me. I gave EVERYTHING, every second, for our shared goals. I loved training you, coaching you, supporting you (even when it was difficult), and finding solutions with you and the team to help you perform. I will keep in mind your unconventional magic as a player, which is your strength. It will return, I’m sure.”

Yet despite their shared success, the relationship was not without friction. Medvedev’s on-court temper occasionally drove Cervara to walk out mid-match, and this season’s volatility has accelerated the split. Currently ranked world No. 13, Medvedev has lost twice to Bonzi in the opening round of majors, including Wimbledon and most recently in New York last week, where he was fined $42,500 for racquet abuse and unsportsmanlike conduct.
