Dan Campbell’s Reaction to the Brian Branch Suspension, a Hallmark of a Truly Exceptional Head Coach

The Detroit Lions were engrossed in a tough Sunday Night Football (SNF) contest against the Kansas City Chiefs in week 6. As the tense match came to an end with the Chiefs winning by a final score of 30-17, a scuffle broke out between Brian Branch and Juju Smith-Schuster of the Chiefs.

Just as Patrick Mahomes went up to Branch to shake his hands, the Lions’ defender kept moving ahead and, out of nowhere, slapped Smith-Schuster on the helmet. The two then tried to go after one another, and it was pandemonium as both sidelines emptied and the matter escalated further.

The league has since then handed out a one-game suspension to Branch for his actions. Lions’ head coach Dan Campbell was asked in his presser yesterday to clarify how a player like Branch can manage his frustration better.

Dan Campbell a True Player’s Coach

Seemingly not flustered at all during the press conference, Dan Campbell assured the press that he spoke with Branch prior to the league suspending him. He also stated that Branch understands he can’t react to any situation the way he did after the Chiefs’ game.

“He knows that. We’ve talked about it,” said Campbell. “I saw him yesterday before all this came down and so he understands all that. You know, he knows he can’t react that way and and he’ll be better for this. So he’ll learn from it.”

The media then asked him how he conveys the message to all his players to remain focused and emotionally invested in the game, but at the same time to ensure the line is not crossed. Once again, Campbell showed plenty of faith in all his players while also praising Branch for being an outstanding person.

“Our guys know that,” continued Campbell. “I mean, look, this is one instance of something that happened and uh, you know, it doesn’t matter what led to it. We all know it’s no different than you’re driving down the road and something happens on the highway, right? You can’t take out your aggression on somebody else. can’t cross that line. Our players know that. Brian knows it. He’s an outstanding young man. He really is. And he’s got a big heart and he made a mistake and he’ll learn from it.”

It is quite refreshing to see a head coach who understands that things tend to happen in the heat of the moment, and while such actions are not excusable, something Campbell also pointed out after the game, it is important not to harp too much on it. At the end of the day, as Campbell said, the players know what is right and what is wrong, and one-off incidents tend to happen every now and then.
