This is not the first time a franchise has decided to move the game to a larger venue. Before the onset of the season, a total of six teams including the Atlanta Dream, Washington Mystics, Chicago Sky, Las Vegas Aces, the Wings, and the Connecticut Suns moved their home games against the Fever to bigger venues. This can be simply due to the popularity of Caitlin Clark, the Fever superstar.
Not only this, but the previous encounter between the Wings and the Fever on June 27 saw a footfall of 24,409 at the American Airlines Center. It not only established a franchise regular-season record but the game also became the eighth regular-season game, and tenth overall, in the league to be played in front of a 20,000 crowd. With this, the Wings became the fourth team behind the Washington Mystics, Las Vegas Aces and the Detroit Shock to draw the attendance of over 20,000 fans.
Notably, the game that saw the Fever recording a 94-86 victory, was watched by 1.14 million viewers. With this, it became the most-watched WNBA game on ION this season and the seventh most-watched game on the network. One of the biggest reasons behind the same is the rivalry between Clark and the Wings’ rookie Paige Bueckers. Both Clark and Bueckers have been two of the most popular collegiate players, and fans want to see more of them!
