The Dallas Mavericks will tip off their 2025-26 NBA regular season with a revamped roster after drafting No.1 pick Cooper Flagg to strengthen their front court. However, they will be without Kyrie Irving, who is expected to be out of action until early 2026 with a torn ACL suffered in March. They will welcome the San Antonio Spurs at American Airline Center in Dallas on Wednesday, October 22. 

The Spurs had a disappointing 2024-25 season that ended with a poor 34-48 record. However, they head into a new NBA season led by Victor Wembanyama, who is seeking a strong start after the previous season led to personal setbacks with a blood clot in right shoulder.

Analysis and Rationale 

The biggest advantage for the Dallas Mavericks heading into the season opener is full home-court energy with new additions such as Cooper Flagg who add scoring punch. While the preseason isn’t a full test, the Mavericks went 3-1, while the San Antonio Spurs remained undefeated throughout the preseason and finished the campaign with a 4-0 tally. 

Anthony Davis, who featured in only nine games for the Mavericks following a blockbuster trade from the Los Angeles Lakers, averaged 10.1 rebounds per game. We can expect him to be high on energy and put on a similar performance to tip the season off on Wednesday. 

Victor Wembanyama made 46 appearances for the Spurs before deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in his right shoulder ended his season. However, by then, he had posted an average of 24.3 points per game. We can expect him to resume where he left and score over 25 points to give his side a strong start. 

The under 224.5 points seems like a good bet as both teams could take a cautious approach in the beginning of the season. 

Mavericks vs Spurs Prediction 

Both Mavericks and Spurs had solid preseasons under head coaches Jason Kidd and Mitch Johnson, respectively. During the offseason, the Mavericks added D’Angelo Russell, who averaged 12.6 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 5.1 assists per outing across 58 games played with the Los Angeles Lakers and Brooklyn Nets. 

Apart from him, Anthony Davis will lead the team until Kyrie Irving recovers from surgery. They also have Klay Thompson, who provides another reliable veteran presence alongside Russell. Names such as PJ Washington, Dereck Lively II and Daniel Gafford will be expected to make pivotal impacts again. 

In addition to it, No. 1 overall pick Cooper Flagg will be the center of the limelight for the Mavs. Expectations are high from the current Mavs roster and if they avoid injuries, they have potential to make noise in the standings. 

On the other hand, the San Antonio Spurs enter with young talent around Wembanyama. They signed Chris Paul for leadership but let him walk away after one year, extending De’Aaron Fox, Jordan McLaughlin, and Bismack Biyombo. New additions including Luke Kornet, Kelly Olynyk, and Lindy Waters III will be expected to make a mark with the new team. However, looking at their roster, it can be said that the Spurs need time to come together and shine. 

Looking at the bigger picture, Dallas has the edge with home crowd and experience. The Spurs, on the other hand, are raw and will need time.
