Dallas Mavericks Select Cooper Flagg As First Overall Pick in 2025 NBA Draft

Cooper Flagg is now officially a part of the Dallas Mavericks.

As expected, the Dallas Mavericks selected teenage superstar Cooper Flagg as the first overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft on Wednesday, June 25. With this, Flagg has become the second youngest No. 1 pick in the NBA history at the age of 18 years and 186 days. He now joins a roster already filled with star power and consisting of names such as Kyrie Irving and Anthony Davis. The Maine-native made a name for himself during his freshman season at Duke University.

Regarded as the top college player in the past season, Flagg recorded an average of 19.2 points, 7.5 rebounds, 4.2 assists, 1.4 steals, and 1.4 blocks per game. He also led his team to the NCAA Final Four. This is not it, as Flagg received coveted honors including the ACC Rookie of the Year, a place on the ACC All-Defensive Team as well as the Wooden Award.

Following Flagg’s acquisition, the Mavericks would become the first team since 1989 to start three first overall picks in the same lineup.

After getting selected as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft as a “dream come true”. Speaking to NBA on ESPN, Flagg said, “It’s a dream come true to be honest. I wouldn’t want to share with anybody.” Flagg credited his family as well as his supporters for his success. The former Blue Devils phenom said, “I wouldn’t be here without without these people right here and all my people back home in Maine, a lot of people up in the box up there they’re here for me. I wouldn’t be here without them so it just means so much to see everybody here and supporting me.”

Talking about Flagg’s new home, It goes without saying that the Mavericks were lucky to have obtained the No. 1 pick in the 2025 NBA Draft after ending the recent past season in disappointment. After trading Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers, they lost several key players to injuries. The Mavs finished the season in the tenth spot with a 39-43 record. Needless to say, all eyes and hopes will be on Flagg and the NCAA icon would be expected to leave the same mark in his upcoming journey.
