Czechia pulled off a dramatic comeback to eliminate the United States 3-2 in the Davis Cup Qualifiers Second Round in Delray Beach, booking its ticket to the Final 8 in Bologna. After Austin Krajicek and Rajeev Ram edged a tense doubles rubber to give the Americans a 2-1 lead, Jiri Lehecka and Jakub Mensik rose to the occasion on Saturday night. They defeated Taylor Fritz and Frances Tiafoe in back-to-back singles matches to send their nation through.

Lehecka and Mensik Flip the Script

The tie turned when Lehecka, ranked No. 16 in the world, knew he had no choice but to stop Fritz to keep Czechia alive. Entering with a 0-4 record in their head-to-head, the US Open quarterfinalist broke through in style. After a long weather delay stretched the day, he outlasted the fifth-ranked American 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, converting three of 17 break points.

The victory leveled the tie at 2-2 and avenged his narrow loss to Fritz in Toronto earlier this summer. That set the stage for Mensik, who had already lost a grueling doubles alongside Tomas Machac earlier in the day. The 23-year-old, around midnight, blasted past Tiafoe 6-1, 6-4 in just over an hour, sealing Czechia’s passage to Bologna and sparking jubilant celebrations.

For the Americans, it was a crushing reversal. Krajicek and Ram, the 2024 Olympic silver medalists in doubles, had seemed to tilt the tie in their favor with a gritty 7-6(6), 5-7, 6-4 win over Machac and Mensik, despite a two-hour rain delay. That gave the home side a 2-1 advantage, only for their singles stars to falter. Fritz, hampered by injury, fought through every point but was undone by Lehecka’s relentless pressure. Tiafoe, backed by a raucous crowd, flashed his trademark flair in the second set before fading against Mensik’s power.
