The Washington Commanders are parting ways with one of their most reliable playmakers. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the team has agreed to trade running back Brian Robinson Jr. to the San Francisco 49ers in exchange for a 2026 sixth-round draft pick, pending a physical. Robinson, 26, was held out of last week’s preseason action, fueling speculation of a move, and is now en route to the Bay Area to finalize the deal.

Shaking Up the Depth Charts

For Commanders, the deal marks a turning point in their RB depth chart. Robinson has topped 700 rushing yards in each of his three seasons, but recent signs pointed to a changing of the guard. Against the Bengals, carries went instead to Chris Rodriguez Jr. and rookie Jacory “Bill” Croskey-Merritt, both of whom impressed in camp. With Austin Ekeler and Jeremy McNichols rounding out the group, the Commanders running backs room now looks deeper, if less experienced, than in years past.

Meanwhile, the move adds critical depth to the 49ers backfield. Christian McCaffrey missed most of last year with injuries, and San Francisco has been cautious with rookie Jordan James (broken finger) and backup Isaac Guerendo (shoulder). Slotting into the 49ers depth chart, Robinson provides a proven option who can take pressure off McCaffrey. The 49ers trade also comes with financial relief, as Washington will reportedly cover part of the $3.4 million owed this season.

Robinson is entering the final year of his rookie deal, making this essentially a low-cost rental for San Francisco. It’s a chance to reset their Commanders RB depth chart, lean into youth, and avoid losing Robinson for nothing next offseason.
