Commanders Extend Terry McLaurin – How Washington’s Offense Can Take the Next Leap?

Just a day before the 53-man roster deadline kicks in, the Washington Commanders completed the biggest move of the year by extending wide receiver Terry McLaurin for another three years.

After what seemed like eternity and frustrations on the part of the Commanders’ top receiver, McLaurin finally put pen to paper on a new deal worth up to $96 million over the next three years. As part of the deal, the former third-round pick will also pocket $30 million in guaranteed money. McLaurin is likely to earn around $30 million per year.

Although the exact details of the contract are yet to be released, the biggest news is that the Commanders can put the saga behind them and focus on the season ahead with the extension coming just in time.

Reason for Holdup in Contract Extension

As talks of an extension took place between the Commanders and McLaurin, it became clear that the main point of disagreement revolved around the financial aspect of the contract.

Understanding the value McLaurin has brought to this team over the years, Washington was never keen on letting him go, but it was the remuneration compared to his age that was hindering progress.

At 29 years of age, the Indiana native will turn 30 in the second week of the regular season. The Commanders were hesitant to pay him top money for the same; however, McLaurin’s overall contributions to the team meant he was unwilling to settle for less.

In a franchise that has gone through ownership changes, multiple name changes, and roster movements, McLaurin has remained a consistent figure throughout it all. As such, even fans wanted him to get paid for his dedication and loyalty.

Nevertheless, with the deal now done, all parties are happy with the outcome. Co-owner Earvin ‘Magic’ Johnson also took to social media to express his delight over the outcome.

How Does McLaurin’s Extension Help the Commanders’ Offense?

After finishing the 2023 season with a 4-13 record, the Commanders surprised one and all by reaching the NFC Championship game last season. A major part of that turnaround was due to them drafting quarterback Jayden Daniels with the second overall pick.

Daniels completely changed the way Washington was able to run its offense. As a dual-threat signal caller, Daniels was able to impose himself on defenses both through the air and on the ground. What was even more exciting was the immediate connection with McLaurin, which led to multiple big plays.

Over the course of McLaurin’s six seasons in the league, he has played with 11 different quarterbacks. This will be the first time the receiver will have the same starting quarterback for the second consecutive season. That will surely make a huge difference as the pair can simply pick up from where they left off at the end of last season.

With McLaurin providing the deep ball threat, the addition of Deebo Samuel earlier in the offseason has boosted the offensive capabilities for Washington. In Samuel, they now have a worthy wide receiver 2 who can complement McLaurin well by gaining more yards after catch with more room to operate.

Tight end Zach Ertz is yet another potent weapon for Daniels over the middle of the field, while the run game also looks impressive. Jacory Croskey-Merritt has shown plenty of promise in training camp and preseason, while Daniels always remains a threat on the ground.

The biggest challenge for McLaurin and the Commanders will be getting up to speed. The wideout ended up missing in on the action throughout training camp as well as preseason due to his contract hold-in. But once that offense starts rolling, the Commanders could be a tough unit to stop.
