College Football Playoff rankings: Oregon, Ohio St., Texas, Penn St. lead projected 12-team bracket in fourth CFP poll

2024 CFP rankings, playoff bracket, and schedule updates

This week’s CFP rankings cleared up plenty of questions that last week’s games stirred. The spotlight was on Alabama, Ole Miss, and Indiana after their losses. In a surprising twist, only Indiana managed to hold on to a spot in the projected bracket this week.

Meanwhile, the Big 12’s hopes took another hit as their projected champion slipped further down the rankings. No. 16 Arizona State has now climbed into the 12th and final spot for the College Football Playoff.

Stick around for updates and details on how to catch the latest CFP rankings release.

Oregon, Ohio State, Texas, and Penn State remain the top four teams in the rankings as we approach the final week of regular-season play. Indiana (10-1) dropped to No. 10 after a tough 38-15 loss to Ohio State but could still secure a playoff spot with a win over Purdue (1-10).

Notre Dame rose to No. 5 after a dominant 49-14 win against previously undefeated Army, which fell out of the rankings. Miami, Georgia, Tennessee, and SMU round out the top 10 alongside Indiana.

CFP bracket

Oregon, Ohio State, Texas, and Penn State remain the leading contenders heading into the final week of the season. Indiana dropped five spots after losing to Ohio State but can still make the playoffs with a win over Purdue.

“We viewed Indiana, they played well at times against Ohio State,” said Warde Manuel, CFP committee chair, on ESPN. “We were impressed with some of the things that Indiana did. And they dropped five, but we still felt that their body of work was strong enough to remain in the top 10.”

Notre Dame climbed to No. 5 after routing Army. Miami, Georgia, Tennessee, and SMU fill out the top 10.

If the playoffs started today, the top four conference champions—Oregon, Texas, Miami, and Boise State—would earn first-round byes. Arizona State, the fifth-best conference champion, would enter as the No. 12 seed.

First-round matchups:

  • No. 16 Arizona State at No. 2 Ohio State
  • No. 8 Tennessee at No. 7 Georgia
  • No. 10 Indiana at No. 4 Penn State
  • No. 9 SMU at No. 5 Notre Dame

Quarterfinals:

  • Winner of Arizona State vs. Ohio State vs. No. 11 Boise State
  • Winner of Tennessee vs. Georgia vs. No. 1 Oregon
  • Winner of Indiana vs. Penn State vs. No. 6 Miami
  • Winner of SMU vs. Notre Dame vs. No. 3 Texas

First teams out of the CFP bracket

Clemson and Alabama sit just outside the playoff bracket this week. Clemson controls its destiny with a matchup against South Carolina, a win that could push them into the bracket if a team ahead of them falters.

Alabama faces a steeper challenge. Following their blowout loss to Oklahoma, the Crimson Tide’s path looks bleak. Even with a win over Auburn, they’ll need multiple upsets among the top-ranked teams to have any chance of sneaking in.
