Chelsea suffered a major pre-match blow when Cole Palmer was withdrawn from the starting XI moments before their kick-off against West Ham United at the London Stadium. The England midfielder is a key figure for the Blues. However, he was replaced by Willian Estevao, who made his first Premier League start.
Palmer, 23, was seen leaving the pitch early during the warm-up accompanied by Chelsea medical staff. Sky Sports later confirmed that he ‘felt something’. manager Enzo Maresca explained that he took a precautionary decision ‘to avoid taking any unnecessary risks’. The club has yet to disclose the exact nature or severity of the issue.

The timing of the incident was particularly disruptive as Chelsea were determined to achieve their first league win of the season. Especially after the goalless draw against Crystal Palace in their first game of the season. Esteao’s sudden promotion to the starting lineup placed him alongside Liam Delap, Joao Pedro, and Pedro Neto in attack.
Palmer has been a key figure for Chelsea since he joined them from Manchester City in 2023. He started 36 Premier League games for the Blues last season. He also helped the club win the Club World Cup last month with a memorable performance against Paris Saint-Germain.

His absence just minutes before a crucial London derby proved to be a setback for Maresca. Especially with the side already facing criticism for a lack of cutting edge in front of goal. Before the game, Maresca admitted that improving conversion rates is vital for Chelsea’s ambitions.
He said, “I was quite happy last year in terms of goals we scored, but with the amount of chances we created, I think we were one of the best in the league.” Despite significant investment in attacking talent this summer, Chelsea’s forward line has yet to find consistency.

In the middle of this, losing their talisman on short notice only adds to the concerns. Especially with three more London derbies not too far behind in their schedule. As Palmer took his place on the bench in a jacket, questions remained about how long the Blues might be without one of their most influential players.
Official confirmation on his condition is expected after further assessment. That can only be expected after their match against West Ham United concludes and the coaching team and Co. can focus on Palmer’s recovery sooner rather than later. Till then, Chelsea fans can only hold their breath that the decision truly was precautionary.
