CAn Raducanu take down the World number 2 on clay?
Today’s match at the Italian Open round of 16 featuring Coco Gauff and Emma Raducanu should be a thrilling encounter. On one side is the American looking to make it to a back-to-back final, while on the other side is the Brit who is trying to make her way back to the top. The one who prevails will make it to the quarterfinals against Mirra Andreeva or Clara Tauson.

Ranked number 3 in the world, Gauff had a decent start to her season, but she was not able to make deep runs in the hard-court swing. However, she rose to the occasion on clay with superb victories against Mirra Andreeva and Iga Swiatek in the quarterfinal and semifinal of the Madrid Open. Unfortunately, she was stopped by Aryna Sabalenka in the final.
So far in Rome, Gauff, following an opening round bye, prevailed past Victoria Mboko after dropping the first set, but then took care of business comfortably against Magda Linette in the third round.
Raducanu has struggled even more than her opponent this season, with Miami being one of her better results as she reached the quarterfinals. In Madrid, she lost in the second round to Marta Kostyuk despite converting 5 of 7 break points.
In Rome, Raducanu played a tough opening round match against Maya Joint, prevailing in three sets before her easy win over Jil Teichmann in the second round. However, she dropped the first set in her last match against Veronika Kudermetova before storming back to win 12 of the final 13 games.

To date, Gauff and Raducanu have faced each other only once before. Their first meeting came at the 2023 Australian Open. The American played a solid match as she took the win in their second-round clash. This will be the pair’s first meeting on clay.

| Coco Gauff | Category | Emma Raducanu |
|---|---|---|
| 3 | Ranking | 49 |
| 248-106 | Career W-L | 127-70 |
| 19-7 | YTD W-L | 8-8 |
| 10 | Career Titles | 1 |
| 1 | Grand Slams | 1 |
| 1 | YTD Titles | 0 |
While both players have won their Grand Slam at the hard courts of the US Open, Gauff feels her best surface is clay. She didn’t play to her best ability in her previous two matches, but it would be hard to bet against her at the moment. Raducanu is still struggling to get back to her best level, and this match may be just too much for now.
Prediction: Gauff in three sets
The betting odds also favor the American, mostly due to her superior play this season as compared to Raducanu.
Coco Gauff Win: 7/25
Emma Raducanu Win: 11/4

After starting my professional career as a French-to-English translator, working as a content writer is a new adventure for me. I started out in the sports media field for two main reasons: my love for sports in general, especially the NFL, NBA, and Tennis, as well as my passion for writing. The best part of this job is that I get to write a variety of pieces with the freedom to explore content from various angles. It also enables me to stay up to date with the sporting world, which otherwise can be difficult to do in the day-to-day grind. In a world full of chaos, sports unite and entertain like nothing else!
