Can the Filipino prodigy announce herself on the grandest stage?
14th seed Clara Tauson will need to fend off a nightmarish opening round battle against Alexandra Eala of Philippines in the 2025 US Open Round of 128 on Sunday. The winner of this match will advance to the Second Round, where they will face either Bucsa or Liu. Danish sensation Clara Tauson has been cooking up a storm in 2025. The 22-year-old began the year by winning the ASB Classic in Auckland, and reached Round-3 at the Australian Open. After reaching the semifinal in Linz, the Great Dane beat World No. 1 Sabalenka en route to the Dubai Open WTA-1000 final. While the clay court season proved to be underwhelming for Tauson, she roared back to form by entering the QFs in Washington DC and SFs in Montreal. Her 18-9 record on hard courts this year has ensured a convincing World No. 14 ranking.

One of the biggest finds of the season, Alexandra Eala’s run to the Miami Open semifinals was arguably the most bewildering moment of 2025. Playing her first WTA main draw contest, the Filipino southpaw beat Ostapenko, Keys and Swiatek en route to scripting history. The 20-year-old also reached the summit clash in Eastbourne, earning her a 26-18 record so far. She has an impressive record of winning 44% return games, as well as a break point conversion rate of 46% on this surface.

This year, she beat 3 former Grand Slam winners at the Miami Open, competed at the French Open, and became the first Filipina to make a WTA final.

The head-to-head record between Clara Tauson and Alexandra Eala is currently 0-0. The 2025 US Open marks their first meeting on tour.
| Clara Tauson | Category | Alexandra Eala |
| 14 | Current Ranking | 75 |
| 257-120 | Career W-L Record | 180-109 |
| 33-17 | YTD W-L Record | 26-18 |
| 3 | Career Titles | 0 |
| 1 | YTD Titles | 0 |
| 0 | Grand Slams | 0 |
Tauson may be slightly unaccustomed to the left-handed prowess of Eala, particularly on a tricky surface such as the US Open. The Filipino will adopt an attacking position on court, and switch direction from cross-court to down the line. It will be a battle of first strike tennis, as Tauson also likes to take control of rallies. Unfortunately, Eala lacks the serve to dominate proceedings, which will put her on the back foot. However, we believe she can produce some magic on Grandstand Court.
Prediction: Alexandra Eala in three sets.
Tauson is a firm favourite in the eyes of the betting market. On the other hand, Eala has been dealt with the underdog title ahead of the US Open Round-1. According to the money line predictions however, Eala comes in with a 75% chance of causing an upset. Here’s what the betting odds have to say (as per BetMGM):
