Chicago Sky’s Playoff Chances: Can Angel Reese and Co. Reach Playoffs Amid 8-Game Losing Streak?

Garima Ranawat

The Sky are currently in the 12th spot of the WNBA standings.

The Chicago Sky are having a nightmare of a season. After finishing the 2024 WNBA season in the tenth spot, the Sky were hopeful to come up with better plans and strategies in order to get better results. However, it seems that nothing is working in their favor. So far, they have been able to win only seven games and suffered 21 defeats. This win-loss record has placed them in the 12th spot in the standings.

The Sky began this season with four consecutive defeats. They slumped to the Indiana Fever, the New York Liberty, the Los Angeles Sparks, and the Phoenix Mercury. However, they defeated the Dallas Wings to record their first victory of the season. That victory was extended to two, and it finally seemed that things had started to fall into place, but we guess it was too early.

The season never got so good for them to think they were safe to make it to the postseason. It got worse when their lead scorer, Angel Reese, had to miss a few games with a back issue. Reese, who is averaging 13.8 points, 12.9 rebounds, and 2.6 assists per game, has played only 23 games and missed five of the Sky’s last seven.

What is the Current Scenario for Chicago Sky?

The Chicago Sky have clearly had a huge impact of Reese’s absence, and they have gone 0-5 in those five fixtures. Needless to say, this poor stretch has taken the team almost completely out of the playoff picture, and their hopes hang by a thread. As mentioned, the Sky are 12th in the league standings and currently 7.0 games back from grabbing the playoff spot. What makes things complicated and tough for them is that there are only 16 contests left this year.

Can Chicago Sky Make it to WNBA Playoffs?

The Chicago Sky are currently on an eight-game losing skid, and out of those eight, seven defeats were in double digits. Their worst loss was one where they slumped to the Seattle Storm by a margin of 38 points. They have an average losing margin of 20.8 points, and with every defeat, they are moving one step away from advancing to the postseason.

The Sky are in dire need of victories and cannot afford even one more defeat. Athlon Sports quoted ESPN’s WNBA Basketball Power Index, which suggests that they have only 0.1% chance to qualify. These are the worst records in the league. The Connecticut Sun have the same probability, while the Dallas Wings are not too far away at 0.4%.
