Chelsea vs Brighton: Three Key Takeaways from 3-1 Shock Loss for the Blues

Chelsea end second consecutive Premier League game with a defeat. They dominated the first half against Brighton, going into halftime 1-0 up thanks to an Enzo Fernandez header. The home side created several chances. They also received free kicks which were saved by Brighton’s goalkeeper.

Hence, they ended the first half with only one goal. Their bright start set the stage for what appeared to be a routine win. However, the contest flipped early in the second half when Trevoh Chalobah was sent off (53′) after a VAR review. Chelsea were reduced to 10 men again.

It was a flashback of Robert Sanchez’s dismissal the previous week. Chelsea struggled to reorganize and Brighton seized the initiative. Super substitute Danny Welbeck scored in the 77th minute to equalise. Then Maxim De Cuyper (90+2′) scored before Welbeck (90+10′) struck again late to complete a stunning 3-1 comeback.

1. Strong Start Squandered

Chelsea controlled possession and territory early on, taking a deserved 1-0 lead. They created multiple chances. However, a second goal eluded them as they saw shots from Reece James and Fernandez beaten away by keeper Bart Verbruggen.

Their poor finishing meant Brighton survived unscathed at 0-1. As a result, this has now become the second consecutive home game where a strong Chelsea first-half performance was followed by a collapse. It was a repetition of their last week’s performance and defeat against Man United.

2. Trevoh Chalobah Red Card Decisive

Trevoh Chalobah’s second-half foul on Brighton’s Diego Gomez was another repetition of their mistakes last week. VAR looked into the foul to announce it to be a clear goalscoring denial and Chalobah saw a red card on 53rd minute. With Enzo Maresca’s men down to 10 men, their defensive shape was compromised. The dismissal forced Chelsea to bunker and finally crack under pressure.

3. Chelsea vs Brighton: Visitor’s Resilience

Brighton kept pressing after Chelsea went a man down. After struggling until the red card, the Seagulls’ substitutes turned the tide. Danny Welbeck was brought in off the bench. He headed in the equaliser in the 77th minute. He also added a second in stoppage time.

In between, Maxim De Cuyper scored a header at 90+2′. This stoppage-time flurry saw Brighton’s resilience bear fruit leaving Chelsea with another humiliation twice in as many weeks. Welbeck, in particular, has now scored six goals in seven games against the Blues.
