Chaotic Night for Wout Weghorst: Striker Suffers Bloody Head in Chelsea vs Ajax Clash

The Chelsea vs Ajax Champions League league phase clash turned into a night to forget for Wout Weghorst. His eventful first half included both a goal and a painful injury that left him bleeding on the pitch. The Dutch striker found a spirited start into the game, even finding the net.

Even so, the evening ended in disappointment. Ajax were ultimately thrashed 5-1 at Stamford Bridge. The visitors were already under pressure after two defeats in the group stage. They also faced an uphill battle when Kenneth Taylor was shown a red card just 17 minutes in.

Chelsea quickly took advantage. They raced into a 2-0 lead through Marc Guiu and Moises Caicedo. But Ajax briefly found hope when Weghorst confidently converted a penalty in the 33rd minute. It briefly gave the travelling fans something to cheer about.

Painful Collision Halts Momentum in Chelsea vs Ajax

Just moments after his goal, Weghorst was involved in a nasty collision with Chelsea defender Tosin Adarabioyo. The Englishman’s boot accidentally caught the Ajax striker’s head as both players went for a loose ball. It left Weghorst with a bloody gash on his forehead.

Medical staff rushed to his aid, bandaging the wound before he returned to the field. Despite bravely playing on, the 33-year-old’s discomfort was clear. Early signs suggest that the head injury was not serious. His night only worsened minutes later when he fouled Enzo Fernandez inside the box.

He gifted Chelsea a penalty at a crucial stage. The Argentine stepped up and calmly converted into a goal. The Dutch forward’s frustration grew as he received a yellow card soon after. That finally prompted Ajax boss John Heitinga to replace him at half-time to prevent further risk.

From Old Trafford Struggles to Ajax Revival

The injury came at a time when Weghorst had been rediscovering his rhythm in Amsterdam. After short-lived spells at Manchester United, Burnley, and Hoffenheim, the veteran forward joined Ajax permanently in 2024 and has since scored 17 goals in 41 appearances.

His return to form helped Ajax secure Champions League football this season. However, the defeat at Stamford Bridge marks their third consecutive loss in the competition. The 5-1 result not only deepened Ajax’s European woes but also raised concerns about their star striker’s condition.
