Carolina Hurricanes Place Defenseman Ty Smith on Waivers Again

Carolina Hurricanes defenseman Ty Smith faces waivers due to roster movements, with teams having until Sunday to make a claim.

Ty Smith has frequently found himself in transactions this season, having been moved to and from the minors multiple times already. Nonetheless, he has now been on Carolina’s roster for 30 days since passing through waivers at the start of the year. This implies that he must once more pass through waivers before he can proceed. The Hurricanes took that action today, as PuckPedia reports that Smith has been placed on waivers.

The 24-year-old is currently in his inaugural complete season with Carolina after being obtained at last season’s trade deadline in the Jake Guentzel transaction, and he is on a one-year, $775K two-way deal. Smith has dedicated a significant portion of the year to the reserve role with the major team (or traveling to or from the minors), making it hard to find playing time up to this point.

Smith has participated in 13 games with AHL Chicago this season and has been quite effective, scoring three goals and adding seven assists during those appearances. He has made eight appearances with the Hurricanes, scoring one goal and providing one assist while averaging 13:40 of ice time per game. Throughout his career, Smith has accumulated 49 points in 131 NHL games, the majority of which were earned while playing for New Jersey, who selected him 17th overall in the 2018 draft.

Teams will have until 1 PM CT on Sunday to submit a claim for Smith. If he goes through waivers without being claimed, his waiver clock will restart in both areas. In other terms, he won’t have to clear again upon hitting the 10-game mark for the season, but rather if and when he participates in 10 games after his waiver period ends tomorrow.
