Carlos Alcaraz vs Sebastian Baez Match Preview

Carlos Alcaraz enters this tournament on the back of a Laver Cup defeat with Team Europe. The 22-year-old had a 1-1 record in singles, and 2-0 record in doubles. Apart from this, Carlitos’ record on tour this year speaks for itself. He has won seven titles, two runner-up trophies, and also reached the Indian Wells semifinal. Alcaraz boasts a record of 61-6 as of the Laver Cup, and he has won over 56% total points on hard courts this year. The Spanish bull has served more than 400 aces in 2025 alone – which is a big reason for his run of eight straight tour-level finals.

Standing up to face the much-improved serve of Alcaraz, will be Sebastian Baez. The World No. 41 has won just three encounters in his past six tournaments – starting from Wimbledon. An unwanted combination of injuries and the lack of being able to keep up with the level of the men’s circuit, has resulted in the 24-year-old stooping to a miserly record of 16-19 so far. While a title charge in Rio happens to be Baez’s only noteworthy contribution, he has taken significant strides on the ATP Challenger Tour.

Carlos Alcaraz vs Sebastian Baez Head to Head Record

Alcaraz leads the head-to-head against Baez by 2-0. They faced each other at the Next Gen ATP Finals, before a maiden Grand Slam duel followed one year later.

Carlos Alcaraz vs Sebastian Baez ATP Japan Open 2025 Prediction

Unless something out of the ordinary takes place, Alcaraz is the clear favorite in this match-up. Baez does not have the groundstroke power and accuracy to match the six-time Grand Slam champion, and cannot serve his way to safety either. Considering their styles of play, the Argentine is likely to be pushed on the back-foot more often than not, leaving him vulnerable.

Prediction: Carlos Alcaraz in straight sets.
