Carlos Alcaraz’s shocking second-round loss to Cameron Norrie at the Rolex Paris Masters 2025 has suddenly reignited the ATP’s most intense rivalry at the top of the rankings. For Jannik Sinner, who just days ago claimed it was “impossible” to return to world No. 1 this season, the door has now swung wide open. With Alcaraz’s 17-match Masters 1000 winning streak snapped in Paris, Sinner’s path back to the summit is now in his own hands. So, win the title at La Defense Arena, and the Italian will reclaim the world No. 1 ranking on Monday.

Sinner’s Battle for Year-End No. 1 Just Got Reignited

Sinner’s first 65-week reign as the world’s top-ranked player ended after the US Open, where Alcaraz defeated him in a thrilling final to capture his second major of the year. But the Italian now stands just 740 points behind in the ATP Live Rankings, holding 10,510 to Alcaraz’s 11,250. Crucially, Sinner is not defending any points in Paris this week, while a title would add 1,000 fresh ones to his total, pushing him to 11,500 and back to the top.

However, his hold would be brief. Even if Sinner lifts the Paris trophy for the first time, he would only keep the No. 1 spot for a week before returning it to Alcaraz ahead of the ATP Finals in Turin. This is because the Italian is the defending champion, and so he must defend the 1,500 points earned from last year’s home triumph. Alcaraz, on the other hand, only has 200 points to defend in Turin, giving him a mathematical advantage to close out the year.

Still, Alcaraz’s unexpected Paris exit has made the ATP Year-End No. 1 race more dramatic than ever. Should Sinner win both Paris and Turin, he would overtake Alcaraz by 1,050 points in the Race to Turin standings. In that scenario, Alcaraz would need at least 450 points, equivalent to reaching the ATP Finals championship match with one group stage win, to have a chance at finishing the season on top.

Before Alcaraz’s early exit, even Sinner admitted that such a turnaround seemed unrealistic. “It’s impossible to finish the year at No. 1,” Sinner said earlier this week. “Honestly, I’m not thinking about this at the moment. It’s going to be a goal for next year. This year it’s not in my hands.” However now, with Paris within reach and the world watching, Sinner has a golden chance to make the impossible possible.
