Canadiens Recall Joshua Roy on Emergency Basis, Send Owen Beck to AHL

Montreal calls up Roy for a second NHL stint while Beck returns to Laval for more ice time and development.

The Montreal Canadiens have made some roster moves ahead of their upcoming back-to-back games, recalling forward Joshua Roy on an emergency basis while sending Owen Beck down to the Laval Rocket in the AHL. Since Roy’s recall falls under emergency conditions, it won’t count toward Montreal’s four-callup limit.

This marks Roy’s second NHL stint this season. The 21-year-old played four games in his first call-up but didn’t register a point. However, his AHL performance has been outstanding—he’s racked up 20 goals and 15 assists in 40 games and was named an AHL All-Star last month. Lately, he’s been red-hot, scoring in three straight games and netting four goals in his last five outings.

Meanwhile, Beck, who was also named an AHL All-Star (ironically replacing Roy), heads back to Laval after 12 NHL appearances this season. The 20-year-old center has managed just one assist with the Canadiens while averaging under 10 minutes of ice time per game. Despite the limited role, he’s been noticeable, delivering 23 hits and showing promising underlying numbers.

Beck has been solid in Laval, recording 13 goals and 19 assists in 47 games. His return to the AHL will allow him to play more minutes, regain confidence, and continue developing with one of the top teams in the league. Roy now gets another chance to prove himself at the NHL level as the Canadiens hit the road for crucial matchups against Vancouver and Seattle.
