Canadiens, Ducks Reportedly Discussed Potential Trevor Zegras Trade

Trade Talks Heat Up as Montreal and Anaheim Explore Deal for Young Star

Sometimes, the trades that never happen create just as much buzz as the ones that do. That was certainly the case when reports surfaced that the Montreal Canadiens were in serious talks to acquire Trevor Zegras from the Anaheim Ducks during the 2024 NHL Draft. According to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman in his column 32 Thoughts, the deal was close but never materialized, leaving fans to wonder what might have been.

The reason behind the failed trade remains unclear. However, Friedman speculated that it may have had something to do with Ivan Demidov unexpectedly falling to the Canadiens at the fifth overall pick. Montreal wasn’t willing to part with that selection for Zegras, but no doubt, acquiring the young forward would have bolstered their top-six lineup.

Zegras is an exciting talent known for his creative playmaking and offensive flair. His ability to make highlight-reel plays has made him a fan favorite in Anaheim, but injuries and defensive struggles have clouded his tenure with the Ducks. Over his NHL career, Zegras has notched 67 goals and 185 points in 265 games, including two consecutive 60-point seasons from 2021 to 2023. However, staying on the ice has been a challenge. Since the start of the 2023-24 season, he has played in only 85 games, just over half of the possible contests, due to various injuries.

Had the trade gone through, Zegras could have been a great fit under Canadiens head coach, Martin St. Louis. The former NHL star has developed a reputation for fostering offensive talent, playing a key role in Cole Caufield’s breakout. Zegras may not be as prolific a goal scorer as Caufield, but his ability to generate offense could have thrived in St. Louis’s system.

There’s also an interesting off-ice connection that makes this potential trade even more compelling. Zegras shares a close friendship with Canadiens winger Cole Caufield and New Jersey Devils star Jack Hughes, dating back to their time with the U.S. National Team Development Program. A reunion with Caufield in Montreal could have led to some exciting chemistry on the ice.

Even though the trade didn’t happen, it’s possible that discussions could resume in the offseason. If Montreal wants to add another dynamic forward to its roster, Zegras remains an intriguing option. Whether or not he ultimately dons the Canadiens’ jersey, this near-trade has given fans plenty to talk about, and perhaps it’s only a matter of time before a blockbuster deal finally comes to fruition.
