News from the Buccaneers’ training camp highlights the crucial development of rookie wide receiver Emeka Egbuka, who is being held in high regard by his teammates.

The 19th overall pick from this year’s draft, Egbuka has earned high praise in particular from long-time Bucs receiver Mike Evans. To be talked about with such admiration can only be a confidence booster for the young rookie looking to learn from the best.

Mike Evans on What He Has Seen From Egbuka

Evans, who has been a leading receiver for the Buccaneers for the past decade or so, knows a thing or two when he spots talent. Therefore, speaking to the media during a recent training camp session, Evans was asked about his thoughts on Egbuka.

Judging from what he has seen ever since the rookie arrived in Tampa Bay, the Super Bowl LV winner called him a true professional and one who is going to have an exceptional career ahead of him.

“I’ve seen what I’ve expected to see from Emeka. Already a true professional. He’s gonna be an unbelievable playmaker and have a great career in this league.”

What Does the Buccaneers’ Receiver Room Look Like?

This is not, however, the first time Evans was asked about his new teammate. Back in June, during the OTAs and minicamp, Evans sang high praises of the Bucs’ wide receiver room, especially with the addition of Egbuka from the draft this year.

“I know I say it a lot, but this might be the best receiver room I’ve been a part of. Emeka’s (got) really strong hands, super smart. He looks like a running back, but he catches like Chris Godwin. He’s a very polished, very well-rounded player.”

A quick glance at Tampa Bay’s receiver room shows immense talent in the pass-catching department. Evans, at 31 years of age, will still lead the way as he guns for a record-extending 12th year to start a career with 1,000-plus receiving yards.

His partner in crime, Chris Godwin, is more than capable of leading the team when healthy. Unfortunately for the Bucs, Godwin missed the last ten games of the 2024 season due to an ankle dislocation, which required surgery. But he also had over 1,000 receiving yards in the four seasons prior to that.

Then come the rookies, Egbuka and Tez Johnson. Egbuka is heading into his first season as a professional on the back of a 1,000-plus receiving yard season with the Ohio State Buckeyes, while Johnson, a seventh-round pick, is valued for his overall speed and quickness.

Buccaneers’ quarterback Baker Mayfield will have plenty of options to find an open receiver. If he continues to play at the high level he has been playing since his career resurrection in Tampa, this Bucs’ team could pose a serious challenge in the NFC.
