Brooklyn Nets Waive Point Guard Keon Johnson ahead of NBA Season 2024-25

With the Nets' roster shuffling, he ended up playing 79 games, starting 56 of them last season.

The Brooklyn Nets agreed on Wednesday to release point guard Keon Johnson. The 23-year-old player defended the team throughout the last NBA seasons , with emphasis on his participation in the 2024-25 campaign. Michael Scotto, journalist for the HoopsHype portal, anticipated the information on his social networks.

Selected 21st overall in the 2021 Draft by the New York Knicks, the youngster was traded to the Los Angeles Clippers that same night. He would play his first fifteen NBA games for the Californian franchise. Failing to achieve much prominence, he was traded again, this time to the Portland Trail Blazers.

Nets narrow down their point guard options after unusual Draft

Johnson had some good moments in his first season with Oregon, but didn’t see much success in 2022-23. Then, as a free agent, he signed with Brooklyn on a two-way contract. As a result, he ended up spending more time with the Long Island Nets, the team’s G League affiliate.

Last season, he enjoyed the best performance of his career. With the Nets’ roster shuffling, he ended up playing 79 games, starting 56 of them. He averaged 10.6 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 2.2 assists. However, he only made 31.4% of his shots from the perimeter. Recently-waived G Keon Johnson was dealing with an injury at the time of the decision, which may have factored into Brooklyn’s move.

Back in June, the Brooklyn Nets made history by becoming the first franchise in league history to select five rookies in the first round of the Draft. Of these, four are point guard options. Initially, Egor Demin (pick 8), Nolan Traoré (pick 19), and Ben Saraf (pick 26) are primary point guards and are expected to share minutes throughout the campaign. This week, they also welcomed fellow point guard Kobe Bufkin from the Atlanta Hawks .

Drake Powell, drafted at number 22, is a shooting guard, the same position occupied by Keon Johnson. However, he can also play small forward. Currently, the Nets still have Tyrese Martin and Cam Thomas on their roster , who accepted a qualifying offer to remain in New York for the season. Next offseason, however, he will become an unrestricted free agent, eligible to sign with any other team.
