Brian Daboll Fired- Who are the Potential Head Coach Candidates for the NY Giants and Who Serves as Giants Interim HC?

Eric Divakaran

The New York Giants fired head coach Brian Daboll on Monday after the team blew a double-digit lead in 24-20 loss to the Chicago Bears. This was the second time this season the Giants lost after leading by 10+points with under four minutes left. Only the 2004 Seattle Seahawks had done that before.

Daboll started strong in 2022, leading the Giants to a 9-7-1 record and a playoff win. He even won Coach of the Year. But since then, the team has gone 11-33, one of the worst records in the NFL. The Giants are now 2-8 this season, with blown leads in four road games. Daboll finished with a 20-40-1 record. His time was marked by tension, staff changes, and poor results despite drafting rookie QB Jaxson Dart.

Who Will Serve as the Interim Coach for the Giants?

Assistant head coach and offensive coordinator Mike Kafka will take over as interim head coach. Kafka has been a rising name in coaching circles, and he was a finalist for several head coaching jobs in recent years. If he performs well in the final games, he could earn the full-time role.

Top 5 Head Coach Candidates After Firing Brian Daboll

  • Mike Kafka – He is the obvious choice in this list. Kafka will already be serving as the interim coach and why not convert him to a head coach? Kafka is a strong play-caller with head coach experience in interviews. A good finish is all he needs for the Giants to keep him around.
  • Klint Kubiak – Kubiak serves as the Seahawks offensive coordinator and has built an explosive offense for them with young talent surrounding him. He also helped the Saints score 40+ points in the first two games of 2024 before they lost Derek Carr to injury.
  • Jesse Minter – The Los Angeles Rams’ defensive coordinator turned a weak defense into a top-6 defense in the NFL. Minter is young, a smart defensive mind, and ready for the head coaching job as he’s been coaching since 2006, with his life revolving around coaching.
  • Joe Brady: Bills Offensive Coordinator knows how to develop quarterbacks, which is what the Giants need as of this moment, with rookie QB Jaxson Dart showing potential but still raw. Another Buffalo connection could bring fresh offense to Dart.
  • Kevin Stefanski: Two-time Coach of the year. When the way Browns’ season is going, he could be fired. And if fired, he’d bring stability and strong staff like DC Jim Schwartz, which could be the answer for the Giants.

The Giants have kept GM Joe Schoen and believe in their young core. Whoever the new head coach will be, they must fix the late-game collapses and build wins fast. Giants fans are expecting more and their patience is running thin.

I cover the National Football League and things cannot get better than that. I always dreamed to play football or basketball professionally since I’m built like a Running Back. But now that I can’t, since I’m technically in the “Unc” age, I thought why not pick a career in sports industry? So here I am, doing what I love, and hoping that the Commanders win the Super Bowl. I give love to players when it’s due, but can be critical about their performances at the same time. Enough about me, now let my articles do all the talking.
