Brazilian giants Botafogo opened their FIFA Club World Cup 2025 campaign with a gritty 2-1 victory over Seattle Sounders on Sunday evening. The victory was powered by two first-half headers from Jair Filho and Igor Jesus. The South American champions held off a spirited second-half rally from Seattle to claim all three points in their Group B opener.

The breakthrough came in the 28th minute after Seattle left-back Nouhou Tolo committed a needless foul just outside the box. A pinpoint free-kick delivery from former Brazil international Alex Telles found 20-year-old forward Jair Filho, who scored a powerful header past Seattle goalkeeper Stefan Frei to make it 1-0.

Just before the half-time whistle, Botafogo striker Igor Jesus doubled his team’s advantage with another headed goal. This time, Frei was caught flat-footed as Jesus’ effort crept past him at the near post. Botafogo entered the break with a dominant 2-0 lead.

Botafogo Hold Off Seattle Rally in Second Half

The MLS side responded with urgency after the interval as they started to dominate possession. As a result, Seattle even created multiple scoring opportunities after that. Their efforts finally paid off in the 76th minute when midfielder Cristian Roldan found the net with a deflected header. The goal brought Seattle back into the contest and also ignited the home crowd, who spurred their team on.

Despite the momentum shift, Botafogo’s defense held firm under pressure in the closing minutes. As a result, the Brazilian side clinched a well-deserved 2-1 victory in its opening match of the tournament. Seattle goalkeeper Frei was instrumental in preventing a wider margin of defeat as he made several key saves earlier in the match to keep Seattle within reach.

With the win, Botafogo sit second in Group B, behind Paris Saint-Germain, who dominated Atletico Madrid 4-0 earlier in the day.
