Boston Celtics sold for Record-Breaking $6.1 Billion: Who is Bill Chisholm?

The biggest sale in NBA just happened. The Boston Celtics are sold for a whopping $6.1 billion to Bill Chisholm, managing partner at Symphony Technology group. This is the largest sale for a sports franchise in North America.

Previously, owned by the Grousbeck family, Wyc Grousbeck was the majority owner and governor of basketball operations from 2002-2025. In 2002, the franchise was purchased for $360 million by the Grousbeck. Nearly a 17% increase on their returns. The Celtics won two NBA championships during Grousbeck family’s ownership, 2008 and 2025.

According to online reports, Wyc Grousbeck is expected to remain governor through the ownership change.

Who is Bill Chisholm?

Bill Chisholm is a Dartmouth graduate who grew up in Georgetown, Massachusetts and is rumored to be a lifelong Boston Celtics fan. He also has a sports connection and played on the Dartmouth soccer team from 1988-1991.

Chisholm is the co-founder of STG, a private equity firm recognized for it’s investments in software and other technology businesses.

A $6.1 billion investment marks a significant commitment from Chisholm, showcasing deep interest in the Cs. It remains to be seen whether this ownership change will lead to management or coaching adjustments or if the team will continue on its current path. The franchise is among the favorites to win the 2025 NBA Championship, meaning a payday for Chisholm in his first-season. With Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown at the helm, supported by top support players in Jrue Holiday and Derrick White, the Celtics can be a long stay in the NBA Finals over the coming years.
