The Celtics are trailing the best-of-seven series against the Knicks 0-2.
The Boston Celtics set an unwanted NBA record as they recorded two straight losses in their Eastern Conference Semifinals series against the New York Knicks. The Knicks stole home court advantage from the Celtics, and pulled off two back-to-back upsets to secure a 2-0 lead in the series. In Game 1, they registered a 108-105 OT win, and in Game 2, the Knicks secured a narrow 91-90 win to further solidify their dominance.
Amidst their woeful semifinal run, the Celtics found themselves creating an unwanted NBA record. In Game 1, Boston went 15-of-60 from the three-point arc to set an NBA playoff record for most missed threes in a game. The record was further extended during their Wednesday-night loss, when the 18-time champions shot 10-of-40. With this, they created a new NBA record for most missed three pointers (75) in the span of two games.
The reigning champions were one of the top favorites to clinch the NBA 2025 Championship before the beginning of the NBA 2025 Playoffs. In their opening round, they recorded a 4-1 win over the Orlando Magic, and booked a conference semifinal berth against their No. 3 counterparts. Considering they had a remarkable regular-season and were one of the three teams that crossed the 60-win mark, the Knicks were underdogs heading into the semifinals.
In both their losses, the Celtics maintained an upper hand for the majority of the games. However, the Knicks, who were down 20 in the third quarter of Game 1 and 2 made huge comebacks and secured incredible wins on the road to gain a series lead.
Following the Game 2 loss, Celtics’ star guard Jaylen Brown said that they are still confident in getting back into the series despite being down 2-0. Brown, who dropped 23 points, seven rebounds, and five assists in Game 1, and 20 points, six rebounds, and one assist in Game 2 addressed the media and reflected on the losses.
While the reigning Finals MVP admitted that losing a game after being up by 20 points is inexcusable, he also showed faith in his team and confidence in bouncing back. He said, “Two games, we’re up 20 points [and] somehow end up not winning is inexcusable.”
Having played his 131st playoff game as a Celtic on Wednesday, Brown added, “We can get back into this thing, no question… We’ve got a great group. If I had to select any guys that can get it done, it’s the group that we have in our locker room.”
The 28-year-old added that the Celtics need to relax and gear up for Game 3. Brown told the media, “We’ve got to make sure we’re ready to come out for Game 3. I think we’re due for a lot of makes. I think we had a lot of great shots tonight that didn’t go in. We’ve just got to relax, take a deep breath and play Celtics basketball.”
After the first two games at TD Garden, the series will now move to Madison Square Garden in New York for Game 3 and 4 on May 10 and May 12, respectively.
