Andreescu’s 2025 season got off to a rough start after emergency appendix surgery sidelined her for three months. She returned at the Rouen Open but was upset by Suzan Lamens in three sets. Zheng, meanwhile, started slowly with early exits in Melbourne, Qatar, and Dubai but hit her stride at Indian Wells, reaching the quarterfinals before falling to world No. 2 Iga Swiatek. She followed it up with quarterfinal runs in Miami and Charleston, defeating quality opponents like Elise Mertens and Marta Kostyuk.

Most recently, she had an unexpected straight-sets loss to Anastasia Potapova in Madrid, but Zheng’s overall numbers remain strong: 71% of service games won, 33.1% return games won, and a 47.7% breakpoint conversion rate. Her form heading into Rome is statistically solid and mentally sharper.
